Welcome to the blog! We are starting off in our class with the Pogge piece; the other class is finishing up with it. It is in certain ways the most paradigmatically PPE piece we will read all term. I have always wondered if it was better at the opening or the close; this time I'll get to compare and contrast! I will be scanning it and sending it to you in the next couple of days. What is intriguing about Pogge's piece is that he explicitly takes up each of the 3 PPE disciplinary approaches in turn, arguing that the proposal for reforming intellectual property patents for essential medicines that he proposes is economically better, politically (strategically) better, and philosophically (justice) better. You want to try and get clear about what these three arguments are. There are also important discussions along the way of what intellectual property is, and why a Nozickean/Lockean account can't be the right way to think of intellectual property in particular. Baptism by fire!
